Gallery 40/40 is an attempt to reconcile the independence, spontaneity and anarchy of street art with the limitations imposed by the closed exhibition space. The Outdoor Art Foundation invites to cooperation the most interesting Polish artists working in the field of street art / urban art. They represent various styles, techniques and creative philosophies, ranging from ephemeral installations, through sticker, poster, stencil painting, to graffiti (writing). They have only one thing in common: the street.
The artists create their works inside the Northern Barracks in Bema Forts. There are no formal limitations, no given topic or imposed color palette. The creators can act individually or create any spontaneous collaborations.
The building of the Northern Barracks is open to everyone around the clock and not supervised. The works made by the authors invited to the project are mixed with captions and images added spontaneously by the “illegal” graffiti artists and ordinary vandals who visit this place. Forts are alive and ever changing, just as it changes, deteriorates, and continues to revive art on city walls.
The 40/40 project is also an attempt to create a magical place, a favorite corner of local residents, a destination for bicycle trips for Warsaw residents, and with time – a tourist attraction. It is also a low-budget form of revitalizing an abandoned, historic building through artistic activities.
